  1. The State’s seizure of The Pearl’s property without proper compensation is a crime. The number of people who enjoyed The Pearl vs. the “benefits” of the state’s proposed use is absurd. These dedicated business owners deserve proper compensation which would allow them to reopen and continue what they have dedicated their lives to.

  3. I would like to help pearl she should get more support for this property. she really deserve more compensation

  4. I worked at the Pearl for 3 or 4 years. I got to know Steve Lin and his business very well. He is the kindest, generous, dedicated person I have ever worked for. I loved coming to work and listening to his stories and how he built his business.

This saddens me and I willpray for the Lin family.

  7. The State of NJ is just as corrupt as it gets. Any chance to step on the businessman to put a few extra pennies in their pocket, and they’ll do it. It’s a shame. The Pearl was a landmark for Somers Point

  10. Theft and corruption before our eyes. Lets see how they like it when local residents refuse to patronize anything they decide to put in its place. I hope an aggressive, grass roots media campaign is tireless in its efforts to disgrace New Jersey DOT.

  13. Today they demolished an icon of Somers Point…the ironic part is that this morning I received an email from the somers point business association to come out and support a new business venture of a motel trying to open on Macarthur Blvd. and in the body of the email quoted, “The Somers Point Business Association supports this application. Somers point and especially MacArthur Blvd needs this type of economic development. Please come show your support.” This is bullshit….they had a pre-existing business that has been around for decades….YES DECADES…and they did nothing to support this pre-existing business AT ALL…so now all of a sudden the city is so concerned about economic development….what a joke…if you cared so much they would helped and supported THE PEARL!!! It just goes to show how corrupt the city is is…just like the hospital expansion…spent millions to fight it until years later they realized wow…this will create and maintain jobs….DUH????? What a crock of shit! And now its too late because The Pearl didn’t have all the money to fight…it’s SAD and it makes me sick to my stomach and it really goes to show…don’t work for the American dream because…the government at any level can come steal it back from you!!! WHAT A DISGRACE!!!!!!!!!

  14. steve and i were collegemate in taiwan, rep. of china 45 years ago. i have moved to atlantic city since 1997. i know his wife pearl and the restaurant well. i know the story of their eminont domain well. from the information they provided, everyone can see that the n.j. dot’s offer is too low, and comparing the offer of the adjacent and neighborhood properties, it is totally unfair. if this is not wrong, must be discrimnation. i feel sorry that lin’s family has such bad situation now. i strongly support lin’s family to fight for the right and

  17. It is now Thursday, March 11th 2010 and Pearl has still not received any payment from the NJDOT! They already claimed her property, destroyed the back of the building with one of their trucks, dumped a huge pile of dirt in the lot, smashed a front window, and use the lot at night for parking their trucks. The building is not supposed to be touched until a court settlement. Now, Pearl cannot claim unemployment because she was a business owner, doesn’t have any way of making any money, and spent everything she had the last few years on lawyers. Somers Point and the NJDOT are real class acts pushing out a 27 year old family business for a unnecessary parking lot. Can’t wait to see what hotel or restaurant gets the property!

  18. In the “Land of the Free,” you are free to build a business and provide a valuable and voluntary service to the community as long as you remember that the state can freely take it from you whenever it sees fit. If government is truly of the people, by the people and for the people, please count me out of this whole debacle with The Pearl. Theft is always an injustice… even when it’s glossed up in fancy legalese like “eminent domain.”

  19. This is an absolute disgrace what is being done to this family business. The historical building doesn’t need any additional parking. Hardly anyone ever goes there and I know that the Pearl family have no problem with the handful of people that might occasionally go parking in their lot.
In this economic time especially, to deprive this family of the business that they have had for many years in unconscionable.

This woman’s husband has had a heart attack. She is unable to collect any money since she is an “owner” not an “employee”.

How is it possible that we have become so hard-hearted and put more emphasis on “things” than people and their families. I am truly ashamed to be a part of the same county that would allow this travesty to occur.

  22. As a full time student up at Rutgers, coming home for winter break was something I always looked forward to. Being able to finally see my family and friends. And at the same time, making a few bucks working at The Pearl as a waiter/barback. But I knew this year would be different because of the causeway project and NJDOT’s acquisition of small businesses in Somers Point due to “eminent domain.” Now by definition, eminent domain states “the power of the state to take private property for public use with payment of compensation to the owner.” Keep in mind the seizing of The Pearl is NOT for the bridge but rather for a parking lot for the Somers Mansion. Is that really “public use?” How many people even go there? The majority of people who lives in or around SP haven’t even been there. The Pearl has more “public” attractions than the mansion could ever think of. Well, let’s just say it does serve some kind public use. Eminent domain also says compensating the owner for the private property. As a restaurant and bar that’s been around for approx. 30 years since the Lin family has owned it, the market value for this piece of ocean view land is around and above 4million…and how much is the state offering? 1.4/1.6m, really, that’s compensation? More like a rip off, which brings up another question. How is it that the Point Diner and other businesses with a lot less land get offered over 2mil and The Pearl gets less? It’s no miscalculation, the NJDOT has never showed up with any kind of notice or proposal when they started making plans for the causeway dating back to ’02. Again, not the case for other businesses, just The Pearl. Now, why is that? Could it be because The Pearl is owned by a minority? Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we’re in the 21st century but don’t be so naive to think discrimination no longer exists. As a land of freedom and opportunity, does this fit the picture? The U.S. Government has always been on China’s case about human rights, but I guess that’s as far as the U.S. Government cares, not the property rights or any other kind of unfair treatment of its own citizens. This is blasphemy, for a parking lot that hardly ever have any visitors to begin with. Don’t be fooled, it might be a parking now but it’ll probably be turned over to some other business man with a lot of dough to purchase this valuable land because that’s how they make profit. There have been cases where eminent domain seized private property and did nothing or did not do what was intended for that land. The Lin family will keep fighting and they have my support. I hope everybody else will do the same and thank you those for reading this.

  24. 1/11/2010
I just got done listening to the 6pm local news. I heard that the state took over The Pearl. Apparently- to make a park and a parking lot for Somers Mansion. I am appalled. I have lived in this area all my life. For over 40 years of driving my Captain Somers Home. I have never seen one person there. If the state deems that a parking lot is necessary. There is plenty of room on the North side of the property. Additionally, we do not need another park in this area. Kennedy Park is just a hop away and the view is outstanding. The view from this proposed this park is what a giant bridge. The original plans for the new causway showed the roadway passing through the pearl property. As I understand it, the DOT would be able to invoke Eminent Domain. I cannot understand why the DOT and state officials have allowed the use of eminent domain for a “parking lot” to an historic site (what would only require about 10 spaces) and a park for what. Really what is this country coming to. Don’t get me wrong–I love preserving our American history and I love open space, but this really stinks. And to top it all off–The Dot and the state of New Jersey have not given the Lins a dime for thier property. What if the shoe was on the other foot? I dare say the state would have a leg to stand on!! Pay the Lin’s the money and consider yourself luck that the state does not take your land that you have owned for more than 30 years and build a park on it.

  30. This is really something that should be investigated on how the State can take a property and not give fair consideration to the owners of the business that are effected. How can a closed business that has no revenue coming in be paid more than a operating business. The price that the state stoled this property for is a sin. They paid a business that is shut down $180.00 a square foot while they paid an operating business $33.00 a square ft this is an abuse of eminent domain. Good Luck Pearl I know that there are alot of people that are sad to see you go.

  31. A full federal investigation needs to be intiated regarding the phoney eminent domain acquistion of The Pearl in Somers Point, NJ. The claim that the property is needed by the DOT for parkiing for a tiny landmark that NO ONE visits is simply ludicrous. However, with generosity and in the spirit of good community, Steve and Pearl Lin have ALWAY offered to allow would be visitors to park in their lot FREE OF CHARGE as their business didn’t open until 4PM. The second reason that the DOT indicates the property is necessary is for parking for a boat ramp. This too is preposterous! As luck would have it, there is a property that has been closed for years that is located closer to the water and would be far better suited for such use. HOWEVER, because it is owned by Ira Trocki and the case would end up in court for years due to his unlimited financial resources the DOT has opted to plunder a decent family owned business that has been operating for over 25 years in Somers Point contributing to the local culture and financial well being of the city. However, even more criminal is the ridiculous amount of money that the owners of The Pearl have been offered. A business located behind theirs with a property all of 5000 square feet is being paid $900,000. The Pearl’s location encompasses over 42,000 square feet and they have been offered a MEAGER $1,400,000. Not only is their location superior in size but also in value as it has an ocean view that the other property does not. What this translates to is that the other location is being paid $180 per square foot for their tiny property while The Pearl is being paid $33 per square foot. So in essence, the Pearl’s location is approximately 8 times the size of the hot tub location and is being offered less than 2 times the amount paid for the hot tub local. There should simply be an equitable calculation per square foot offered to businesses in the same or similar ares for eminent domain acquistions. In addition to the simple square calculation, there also should be some value placed on the income derived from the business in question. Ultimately, the owners of The Pearl are being robbed of their business, their dignity and their peace of mind because they are seemingly easy targets. What’s being done is criminal and should be the cause of a full federal investigation so that at minimum fair compensation could be delivered to this honest family who is the victim of bad politics and moral injustice.

  34. I had my first date with my wife at the Peal 10 years ago this June. It was also the first place a legally bought beer (when it was still the Shangri La) on my 21st birthday as I headed to Ocean City. I still love the Pearl. It is one of few places in South Jersey that features live original music. It also has the best selection of beer in Somers Point – which is especially nice when you need to grab a quick six-pack to go late at night.

  41. This is so unfair to the Lin family and employees
that the State of New Jersey can have so much power
to take not only a property, but a well run, taxpaying
business for a parking lot for a boat ramp across a very high traffic road to get to a boat ramp. Now that shows no sense, but a personel injury accident waiting to happen, when someone parks that far away from the boat ramp or parking for a Historic Mansion that very few visit! I have also never heard of the State purchasing property to give to a City. Something doesn’t sound right and should be investigated!!! With a very tight budget for New Jersey this is not a wise use of taxpayers money.

  42. I have been a patron of the Pearl since it was the Shangri-La. This is a terrific, friendly and very positive place. It would seem that there are alternatives that can allow the Pearl to remain and function as successfully as it has. I question the motives and planning of the state officials. We have here a decent and respectable family establishment. It will be a true loss if this place is forced to go.

  43. leave the pearl. put your stupid parking lot that most likely will not be used at all some where else. like where tgif was or kfc or even pizza hut. why not even go for where the point is. chances are that place will be closed in 4 months if its even open now. somers point does not need another parking lot

  44. I’ve been a customer in your establishment for 20 and would be hard-pressed to find nicer and more attentive owners than you,Steve and Pearl. The abuse of eminent domain to take from you your lifes work is unamerican and disgusting. It remains to be seen what bigshot or associate of a bigshot stands to benefit from this act of theft. We need to hold accountable all involved, including the conspicuously silent Somers Point council members. 53. I believe that the principle of emminent domain is abused by the governments which impose it these days. Unfortunately, the constitution did not forsee the government taking land for no good reason (A parking lot?? For a beat up building that nobody cares about???), and therefore did not specify conditions. There is a difference between taking land for national empowerment, military use, or something useful like a park –versus an overdone tourism scheme which wastes millions of taxpayer dollars.
Next, emminent domain requires fair compensation. Just because the state says that its compensation is generous and that its purpose is public, it isn’t necessarily fair. I think the affected land owners should first of all be involved in the planning of the public project in question, and that no resolution shall be agreed upon until every affected party is satisfied. The tax assessment value of a property means nothing in terms of what realistic property values are. If the land owner(s) were to buy a similar tract of land including all costs necessary to establish that which they have lost, that dollar amount is more realistic. Since the state is so eager to take land from people who don’t want to lose it and everything it stands for, it should be prepared to compensate for the inconvenience.

  70. Once again, nobody knows what’s going on with the Pearl to date! I asked Pearl what the latest was and tearfully, she said no one has contacted her. Holding back an ocean of tears, she told me how disappointed she was that a minority family business could just be taken over by entiment domain. She said she could understand it if she was in a communist country and never thouht it could happen here in “the land of opportunity.” Her husband, Steve, told me of a couple plans / ideas that were more sensible and not too late to be done. He has the “what can I do?” additude. I think the NJDOT should listen $/or hire him. His ideas make more sense; cost less; destroys no businesses & are do-able. I really hate what’s going on (& nobody knowing when things are supposed to happen)! EVERYTHING IS TOTALLY UNCLEAR…..WHY?????????

  85. Every year hundreds of family and small businesses are forced out of business due to external economic and internal management factors. Eminent Domain is taking The Pearl, this small family run business, which has weathered all the factors stacked against it, and is turning it into a parking lot? How is that progress? Just because you have eminent domain does not make irrational and potentially damaging decisions without public input a sign of good faith.

  95. The NJ DOT is going to Tear down The Pearl through Eminent domain to create a parking lot for The Somers Mansion. I go to The Somers Mansion and they are lucking to get a few visitors a week. The parking lot is going to be an ecomomic waste. No wonder NJ is a billion dollars plus in debt. The Pearl contributes towards the Somers Point Charm and ecomonic stability. Pearl and Steve Lin are hard working Chinese Americans who deserve to keep their Restaurant. Wake up America!

  97. Ahh yes as the state of New Jersey strikes again, taking away another Somers Point institution. An icon that has been at that location for decades. The land is need for additional parking for Somers Mansion? In all my years of living here , I don’t think I have ever seen a vehicle parked there! Somebody in Trenton has better get a grip on reality & leave The Lin’s alone! Better yet, why dont’t the pull eminent domain on that eyesore that Troki owns across the street. That won’t happen though, because he has money. I wish the Lin’s & their employees the very best.

  102. The Lin family is being punished for living the “American Dream” by having a successful small business! In these tough economic times when many small businesses are failing the state decided to take this successful buisness’ land. Where is the logic? This is the most asinine plan that the NJ DOT has come up with in a long time all in the name of “progress” called a parking lot. NJ DOT should be called Scrooge for forcing the Lins to close during the holidays. Calling the state Scrooge would be a compliment because even Scrooge had a heart whereas the state doesn’t! God Bless the Lin family, The Pearl, their employees and their families!

  106. 1. Parking for Historic Somers Mansion.
I have never seen a car or visitor there in 13 years.
    2. Scenic Overview for Historic Somers Mansion.
So, in the case someone actually was in the Mansion, they would see a parking lot with shrubs.
    3. Overflow Parking Lot for a boat ramp on Bay Avenue.
Nevermind the almost vacant, huge, Trocki-owned lot directly across from the yet to be built boat ramp.
    4. Somers Point has the 4th highest crime rate in the County, can’t afford the new 3 needed police officers per shift, but will bulldoze a business that pays about 30k a year in taxes for a parking lot. When do the tax payers get to make up that loss?
    5. Still can’t help wonder if the Crab Trap resided on that lot, how the State would work around them (or if their offer would be the same 1.4M).

  123. Today I picked up a The Sentinel of Somers Point, Linwood and Northfield. On the front page was an article about construction on MacArther Blvd.Later the article showed a sketch of of what the finished project would appesr. I saw a blurry sketch that shows were the PEARL is & still don’t get it! A LEGENDwith 12 different colors that supposingly attempted to define the finished work. Try & read it , matching the colors at certain points of interest-(mainly the PEARL) and tell else what you saw was gonna be at PEARL’S location. Can’t can ya? That’s the way they were meant to be seen. Uncertainy & cloudiness is overlooked on purpose! What a bunch of Bull Shit! Somers Point merchants had better beware..cause if it dosen’t affect you now-????????????????????

  131. I asked Steve Lin what was the latest & his reply was he hasn’t heard anything from anybody in any position to date. What the hell is going on here? If I owned that prime property, I’d expect, & DEMAND, to be informed what MY private property was being discussed about, out in the open! I wouldn’t sell or get chased out of my business nor accept any unreasonable offer for a parking lot!!!! They’d have to bull-doze me from my private property along with my 27 years of doing business in Somers Point! I was there first, I purchased the property, and I wouldn’t leave for peanuts on the dollar! Overflow parking for the (eye sore shack) somers mansion(?) or boat ramp parking that you’d have to cross Shore Road? Right….My business, my property-not NJDOT’s. Build around it, like the diner or Circle booze store. You want my property, then pay what’s it’s worth or go after Trocki’s empty “POINT”. Anyone know where that is or if it’s generating revenue? No, cause it’s closed!!!! Nothing ever made it there. This stupid unethical decision to take over someone’s vision of buying prime property, operate a business % someday sell to retire after 3 decades, is ruined by ENTIMENT DOMAIN? I don’t think so. The Pearl is not a business that has to be torned down for removing a circle….but it’s seems like it will be. DISGUSTED & and ASHAMED!!!! You know I’m right, but you’d rather attend to your own business affairs…..unless you owned that property!!!!

I hope a miracle gets pulled off and the Pearl stays put. If not I’m really going to miss one of my favorite places to hang. My prayers are with Pearl and her family on this, along with Scotty, Tom, Pete, etc. Somers Point will never be the same again.

The owners, Pearl & Steve are very hard working people who have put their whole lives into this business. One that generates (TAX)revenue, creates jobs, pays taxes, & happen to OWN the property, The State/NJDOT, feel it’s interferring with a $400 millon check to illegally take over an investment/business, when-ever, who-ever, for what=ever!!! They didn’t buy the property that the STATE wants to TAKE OVER knowing they’d get the SHAFT. What if you owned that property? The so-called Historic Mansion is nothing but an EYE-SORE & NO-ONE I know has ever been in it. So what’s the deal???? I’m not saying “Tear down the Historic Mansion,” I’m saying, don’t tear down EITHER!!! Circle Liquour or Point Diner aren’t jepodized ……….. but the BEST location and view of the PEARL is??? It is a place where everyone truly knows your name. In this down turn economy the pearl is a great place to get a great meal at a very fair price. We feel it is very unnecessary to take the restaurant down. governor Corzine ,governor elect Christie & the rest of our elected officials please here our plea. 181. It seems pretty clear that NJ is acting in an arbitrary manner, in the long run, this will undoubtedly be the determining factor in [post]resolution. However, in the mean time, there are so many issues here that are wrong, even making an offer of *fair* value wouldn’t make all those wrongs right — but it’s *is* a straight forward and simple thing for the state to do. The causeway is slated for $400mil (before budget overruns, etc.) — and the state can’t even offer fair price? Something’s fishy. How about, leave the Pearl — build the other stuff, *SEE* if space is needed for more parking (and exactly how much more) — whoa, what an idea. Just how long does it take to make a parking lot in NJ these days?

  187. Save the Pearl!! The whole system is a joke and it is clear that this is an abuse of power. If they take the Pearl, they should take the Diner, Crab Trap, Circle Liquors and everything else on the circle with it; INCLUDING the falling apart Somers Mansion. I always found it QUITE suspicious that the ONLY business targeted, erm… I mean “selected” for this special treatment was the Pearl.

  194. The Lin family has dedicated 30 years of their lives to serving area residents and tourists at the Pearl Restaurant. They’ve employed many and paid property taxes during this time and have been a favorite dining and recreational establishment for generations.Surely an alternative Plan would serve the public better. As a fellow business owner in Somers Point and member of the Somers Point Business Assoc. we would expect better treatment and consideration in spite of our State’s “right” to displace a long standing business.Forcing the closure of the Pearl would obviously adversely impact the Lin family and their lifelong occupation. This is not a “fair” proposition in the people’s view to make room for more parking.Somers Point needs to take care of it’s own people!

  197. The Pearl is the by far the best bar in Somers Point, and is the only escape from the hoards of idiots that crowd every other bar in this town. The Pearl means more to this town than that silly mansion about 100 yards away. Anyone who has been to here knows that it is a one of a kind place to not only enjoy alcohol, but good service, not to mention real people. It seems to me that if the state were attempting to take a place like Gregory’s or god forbid, Charlies, the results would be incredibly different. After all, they are owned by natural citizens. Instead, they have decided to pick on honest and hardworking immigrants, who put more of their heart into their business and satifying their customers than most of us even have. It is inevitable that The Pearl will soon be gone, but just think about what that tells us about how much our state cares about hard work and honest people. This is just another reason why people are leaving this state at a rapid rate. Don’t worry, though, plenty of people here to visit Ocean City will be sure to stop by Somers Mansion on their ways through… just like they have for years. Oh wait…

  216. It’s a terrible shame that this state is being so unfair to the Pearl. There’s no reason why they can’t work with them when all they need is a small portion of their property for this project. Why are they going to take away one of the few good and worthwhile businesses away just to turn it into a parking lot or whatever they want to do with it? And I’m sure they pay PLENTY of taxes that benefit the state and Somers Point. So guess what? Jersey is just screwing themselves out of some much needed income.

I also agree with what someone earlier said on here. Get rid of that trashy club point to use their land instead of somewhere where people actually go. And if the state feels that they cannot budge on their poor position for whatever reason, they need to seriously reconsider their offering price. Fair market value must be given where it is deserved.

  234. AS far as the issues are concerned, you hear certin things from all people.
One thing I’ve heard was the state wants to use the land for a staging area for the constuction companies once the bigger phases of the project moves forward and then as a parking lot for Somers Mansion.I also heard they wanted to use the lot for parking for a boat ramp.Has anyone looked across the street at what is now called “The Point”,which has recently been used as a teen dance club that brings nothing but trouble everytime they open their doors, when it does open.HAS THE STATE LOOKED AT THAT OPTION?NEW JERSEY WAKE UP !Why take a thriving business away when just across the street is a bigger property that is hardly used!?
OH yeah, if you do the wrong thing at least give them the fair market value or set them up somewhere where they can continue to serve the people in this area if they wish to continue. When the courts are involved aren’t they in place to make people wronged to at least be whole again.WAKE UP NEW JERSEY!!

  237. If the Pearl can’t be saved, at least make an equitable and fair offer. Land alone can’t factor…time at the location, business value, etc all apply.

Eminent Domain law in the US is at its basis unconstitutional and with strong-arm negotiation tactics by the States, rare instances of fair offers are seen.

Make this one to remember, NJ. Make it fair.

  261. The Pearl Restaurant has been a part of the Somers Point Community for almost 30 years. It employs and has provided jobs for that same amount of time, while also attracting tourism and business revenue into the city. The Lins are law abiding tax paying Americans who have always paid their dues as model citizens.

Now under the NJ DOT’s plan their property will be turned into a parking lot as part of the highway extension project. Neighboring properties have been offered several times the amount the Lins will receive for a fraction of the area the Pearl Restaurant occupies. The Pearl’s destruction would mean losing a valued small business that’s been a part of the community for years, and the people in our area will not derive any benefit from this new construction project for seasonal tourist. I thought the point of road construction was to improve economic commerce, not force small business to close down.

What are our elected officials doing? We the people of New Jersey have the highest taxes of any other state, along with the biggest problems of corruption. Something like this should not be happening in a democratic State as our own that receives so many tax dollars. Coming home from college this Thanksgiving Break, it is disgusting to see how something like this is happening to an honest hard working family. What happened to all the “change” this Governor Elect promised on his campaign? What is the mayor of Somers Point doing?

  296. The Pearl has given us memories of a life time. America was built on the dreams of individuals like Pearl. Taking ones land without consent or right of value is the oppisite of this belief. This not only effects The Pearl Family, but us all.

  297. It is unfair to confiscate a business lot through eminent domain without proper negotiation and settlement. It will let everybody to feel sorry to see that the Lin’s endeavor of 27 years to make this Pearl restaurant established will evaporate.

  299. I have enjoyed playing music at the pearl. It would be a shame that local bands will have one less place to perform. I do not understand the city of Somers Point. They stand to lose substantial tax revenue for a parking lot for the Somers Mansion. Yeah, people are lining up to get into that place. I think the word unfair is an understatement for Pearl and Steve who have worked hard to keep their establishment going. The Pearl will be sadly missed, and all who work there will be out of a job. This makes no sense at all.

  305. SAVE THE PEARL! I would miss the Pearl too much to lets this happen. Not only me but my friends and the other people I have come across at the pearl. Best bar to go to for the younger crowd rather than the other bars filled will unhappy bartenders and old people. I will do what I can to try to stop this from happening even if it means the pearl will be underneath the bridge.

  306. Save The Pearl! Save The Pearl! We may not allow our government to do such a horrible thing. This is UNFAIR. We will not allow this to fall through without a fair treatment. We may not allow the government to steal from hard working citizens to benefit themselves. There has to be a FAIR negotiation. Seizing Pearl’s family business will put a halt to their livelihood and their many years of great effort in making the restaurant it is today. Our government officials will discover we will stand together to fight and not allow unfair treatment to its people. Save The Pearl!

  307. Save the Pearl below is the email I sent to Govern Elect Chritie:
    Dear Governor Elect Christie,
I know you have your work cut out for you with your new position as our New Jersey Govern.
As you campaigned eliminate wasteful spending, here is the $400 million Somers Point-Ocean City causeway project, one of the most expensive and ambitious transportation projects in New Jersey. This plan calls for a small business owner to be closed for the cost of low ball figure of 1.4 million because of a parking lot. This is a 27 year family owned and operated business that employ’s and supports our community. Additionally this business owner contributes $40,000 in taxes to the City of Somers Point.
    Who is auditing this project?
    Save the Pearl
    Thank you,

  308. This is incredidbly cold-hearted at best, and possibly politically corrupt at worst. Either way, the establishment deserves a much fairer shake if it must be moved, or perhaps as others have noted, there is not genuine reason for it to move at all.

  314. Save the pearl! A family business that’s been running for many years ought to be allowed to continue. For the government to dump so much wasted tax payer money into a DOT project and having to take the land away from a hard working citizen is another sign of the corruption that’s been ever present. People in the DOT get to stuff their mouths with money that hasn’t gone anywhere in terms of improvement while robbing citizens of their fair opportunities.

  316. Here is a copy of the letter I have sent to Governor-Elect Christie.

Good Luck to you Pearl and Steve.

    Dear Governor-elect Christie,

I am aware that you have been previously contacted concerning this matter and I am writing you to ask for your support in Helping the Lin family. I have provided a link to their website where you can access all the details of this case. Please do not let a minority business owner get cheated out of the business they have spent 27 years building. Fair market value through an open negotiation is all that they are asking.

Sir, you ran a campaign that pledged, in part, an end to corruption in this state. I am asking that you please live up to that promise by taking a look at the facts in this case. As a former state attorney in New Jersey, I believe you will be unable to overlook the fallacious manner in which The Yin Family is being treated.

This hardworking, epitome of an American Family is desperate for someone to lend a hand in this their time of need. As our newly elected governor, please take this opportunity to ingratiate yourself to a very loyal constituency that will not forget your act of decency.

    Yours Sincerely,
    Bill Bartle

NOT to any location that could be off the beaten path or down the road further past any present or future competition. Have you ever seen the view or location from Pearl’s business? They didn’t buy the property that the STATE wants to TAKE OVER knowing they’d get the SHAFT. What if you owned that property? The so-called Historic Mansion is nothing but an EYE-SORE & NO-ONE I know has ever been in it. So what’s the deal???? I’m not saying “Tear down the Historic Mansion,” I’m saying, don’t tear down EITHER!!! Circle Liquour or Point Diner aren’t jepodized ……….. but the BEST location and view of the PEARL is??? 355. I have yet to see the proposed plans (nor are they available) for the PEARL RESTAURANT on the Somers Point Circle regarding the STATE’S takeover of said PRIME PROPERTY! What are they hiding/covering up to the people? Of all the places to demolish, the STATE picked the PEARL? Why? You don’t buy PRIME PROPERTY to sell for less than what it’s worth because the STATE says so, do you? What a joke. Not really!!!! This is SERIOUS business! A business that employes, creates community/state tax revenues, and OWNS the property, SHOULD NOT be bull-dozed for POOR PLANNING by STATE hired ROADWAY CONSTRUCTION OUT-SIDERS. This is an OUTRAGEOUS IN-JUSTICE that should NOT happen in AMERICA!!!!

  386. It’s unbelievable for me to see this happening in the United States of America. Since I’ve known Aunt Pearl and Uncle Steve about 3 years ago, I’ve seen them giving everything to their business, just as how they give their everything to their family and friends. Since the time Aunt Pearl got approached by the state for her property and fighting to get treated fairly, I’ve seen how much she has been suffering so much. This is the time when they should be enjoying their lives after putting so much hard work into building their business and their family. They do not deserve to go through this. I hope the state realize that THe Pearl has many supporters and that we will not give up so easily as they may have thought so. I really pray that God will intervene and help The Pearl, because The Pearl doesn’t deserve to lose their property just because the state needs it for an overflow parking… Aunt Pearl and Uncle Steve – we’re behind your back!!!!

  389. Pearl and Steve are long time good friends, more than 40 years. They are kind, always extend helping hands. Steve had a heart problem and treated with surgery months ago, I highly suspect the ailment was caused by this incidence.
This shows how arrogant government officials are, inventing some rediculous reason to take away people’s life time hard work. Same situation would never happen in Canada: seizing priviate property without formally noticing the owner.
I believe Pearl is tired, she can not fight the giant government body, all she asks is being trrated fairly.

The irony is that this family immigrated from a communist country and everthing they worked for is being stolen from them. Not only are the Lins suffering but the City of Somers Point is not receiving the real estate tax that was previously paid by the Lins because the State says they are not required to pay it. Who will pay for this loss of revenue to the City? This action needs to be stopped and the Lins need to be treated fairly.

  393. The Pearl restaurant is a wonderful restaurant that has been owned and operated by a hard-working family for years. We should be rewarding people for their good work ethic instead of punishing them. If the Lin family is not paid a fair price for their property they will be put out of business. It would be awful to have worked hard all of their lives only to have everything they’ve worked for taken away.

  403. This is a cherished place where we use to go when we were growing up and headed down to Ocean City. The food and people are great. The city is losing a wonderful place and it appalls me to see the state is offering this place less then their fair market value. WE SUPPORT YOU AUNTIE PEARL!

  410. The Pearl is owned by my aunt and uncle, and I’ve been visiting them ever since I was a child. But now, to see my aunt fighting for the survival of her business makes me speechless. I can’t imagine anyone else that deserves a better and fairer treatment than them, because I’ve seen first-hand how much they’ve invested into their business. My question is how can NJ state steal away property from a good citizen and small business owner? Give the Pearl a break…better yet, a fair-market deal!!!

  411. I cannot believe what I just read… I feel that The Pearl owners have the right to decide on whether they want to sell their property or not. The state should not go behind her back to get her property without her consent and knowledge. God is watching, and the people are watching, so I think the people involved in this project should be really careful to not step over their boundaries. My heart goes out to Pearl and Steve Lin. They have worked so hard and poured out their hearts into their business. Their sweat and blood is all over that property. I hope that this can be resolved according to what is proper.

  413. Considering that on the north side Mcarthur Blvd there are 6 functioning business,Yet on the south side there are, 2 that closed, an empty lot (that has not been touched in years)and 2 others that are still open the only ones whom are losing their living are the Lins.By the way theres an empty lot across the street and an old bar that opens for kids twice a year, but I guess we’ll take someones business instead of using land that is not being used for anything.I guess thats what 27 years of good business gets you in NJ. GOOD LUCK PearlandSteve

  418. Taking a property without paying market price is robbery, plain and simple. Give this woman the means to re-open her restaurant in a comparable area and the matter will go away. Prayers are with you, Mrs. Lin!

  421. I am friends with Chuck Lin. The Lin Family deserves better treatment than this. Eminent Domain give’s the state right to seize a citizen’s property with due monetary compensation. They are not being offered fair market value for their property and no option to debate. This is an abuse of power.

  423. The Pearl Restaurant & Bar has been around for 20+ years, and it is where my family and I have been working at for over 10 years. I’ve known the Lin family since I was 9, they are great people, have done so much for me and my family and I’m proud to say they’re like my own family. It’s ridiculous how they are being treated and the price offered for the land that’s been around for so long. They have worked so hard for The Pearl and they deserve better.
